Here is a list of the essential equipment needed to play pickleball, along with a description of each:
Paddle:
A paddle is the primary piece of equipment used in pickleball. It resembles a larger version of a table tennis paddle and is typically made of materials like wood, composite, or graphite. It has a flat surface with a handle, and comes in various shapes and sizes. There are many different manufacturers and prices for paddles.
A reasonably priced, intermediate level paddle may be found here.
Pickleball:
The pickleball itself is a perforated plastic ball, similar in size to a wiffle ball. It is designed to be lightweight with evenly spaced holes, allowing for controlled flight and bounce during play.
Popular pickleballs may be found here.
Pickleball Court:
A pickleball court is a rectangular playing area, similar in size to a badminton court, measuring 20 feet wide and 44 feet long. The court is divided into sections for singles or doubles play, and it includes specific boundary lines.
Net:
The pickleball net is similar to a tennis net but is shorter in height, measuring 34 inches at the center. It spans the width of the court, dividing it into two halves.

Court Shoes:
Court shoes provide the necessary grip and support for players to move quickly and make precise movements on the court. They have non-marking soles to protect the playing surface.
These shoes are a good place to start.
Apparel:
Comfortable athletic apparel is recommended, including moisture-wicking shirts, shorts, or skirts, as well as supportive athletic socks. It’s important to choose clothing that allows for ease of movement during play.
Headband or Wristbands (optional):
Some players choose to wear headbands or wristbands to help absorb sweat and keep it from dripping onto the court, ensuring a safe and dry playing surface.
Water Bottle: (this is a good place to start)
Staying hydrated during play is crucial, so having a water bottle on hand is important to replenish fluids and maintain energy levels.
Bag or Carry Case:
A bag or carry case is useful for transporting and storing your pickleball equipment, keeping it organized and protected.
Here is an example of a helpful pickleball bag.
Sunglasses (optional):
Sunglasses with UV protection can help shield your eyes from the sun’s glare, especially if you’re playing outdoors.
Wearing eye protection is critical in a fast-moving sport such as pickleball. Check out this example.
Hat or Visor (optional):
A hat or visor can provide additional sun protection for your face and eyes while playing outdoors.
While these are the essential items, players can also choose to add accessories like grips, vibration dampeners, or specialized paddle covers for additional comfort and customization. It’s important to select equipment that suits your playing style and preferences.
